My Grace-Full Life

The Measure of Faith

Have you ever heard someone say something and you realized in that moment that the idea was so simple, so obvious, you wonder why it never occurred to you?  I recently watched a sermon from Kelly K on YouTube; he was speaking of faith.

(This video is set up to start 4 minutes and some-odd seconds in, but the first part of the video is worth watching too…  However, for the purpose of this post, I wanted to concentrate on the last part…)
I hope you watch this video, but if you’re not in a position to do so, Kelly K is referencing two stories in the Bible:

  • The first story is of Jesus calming the storm…  Matthew 8:23-27
  • The second story is of Jesus walking on the water and Peter jumping out to greet him… Matthew 14:22-23

In both cases, Jesus says to the disciples, “Oh you of little faith.”
Kelly K is focused on the word “little” and has even looked up the definition.  However, he’s re-focused on the 2nd definition in the dictionary:

2.  short in duration; not extensive; short; brief:

He even pulls out his tape measure to prove his point.
How have I never understood this???
The front of my prayer journal is full of “faith” quotes and Bible verses about faith.  I pray regularly that my faith will grow, because the Bible even says that the very faith with which we believe is from God:

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it isthe gift of God,  ~Ephesians 2:8

Kelly K’s sermon is a major Ah-Ha moment for me.
This morning, I shifted my prayers a bit.  I don’t want my faith to simply grow in depth…  I want my faith to grow by length…  so that it carries me from day to day.  When life throws something unexpected my way, I won’t be distracted because my faith won’t be short-lived.  My faith is long and deep.
I’m reminded of the song I sang at church as a child…

Deep and wide
Deep and wide
There’s a fountain flowing deep and wide

I’ve known this song all my life, and it never occurred to me until this week — the fountain is faith.  The truth has been literally staring me in the face for almost 42 years.
Yet again, more proof, that we can learn something new every day.  I am so happy to learning and growing in God every single day!
