PRAYER PROMPT ••• My 6th anniversary is coming up.
It feels much longer (in a good way).
At a wedding, we make promises and expect promises to be kept.
Yet we all make mistakes.
With divorce rates through the roof (and being a divorcee myself), I know all too well how fragile those words are.
I know “for richer, for poorer” are hard words to remember when a check has bounced and bills are coming in.
I know “in sickness and health” are challenging when dinner’s in the oven, laundry needs folding, sales reports are due, and your husband has a man-cold.
The marriage commitment is a lot of work and requires much patience and effort from BOTH parties.
Many couples, a few years in, wonder at how hard marriage really is!
It’s shocking that blissful romantic days have taken a backseat to the realities of daily life… that’s when many, unfortunately, jump ship because they have a completely unrealistic view of what married life is actually like.
They are perplexed that their spouse – a human being prone to flaws and imperfections – could ever disappoint them or break a promise.
If your expectations are for someone who will never let you down; who can always be trusted; who will be with you “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health,” look no further than Jesus.
Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?”
It doesn’t matter how amazing your spouse is.
They will let you down in some way.
They will hurt your feelings.
Don’t give up, but pray for them and with them.
And trust in the one who will never break a promise… God who can never disappoint, but loves you more in a moment than anyone else could love you in a lifetime.
Today, as you pray, praise God that He will never break promises.
If you are married, ask Him to be at the center of your marriage.
Pray for your husband or wife; and pray that you will be the spouse they need too.
