PRAYER PROMPT ••• Have you ever made bread?
It’s amazing how so little yeast can overtake the batch of dough and cause the whole thing to multiply.
Ever put rising dough in a bowl that was too small?
Yeah, me too.
It’s like that old horror film from the 50’s, “The Blob.”
Paul used an illustration of yeast as a warning in a letter to the Corinthians.
His letter, found in 1 Corinthians 5, expresses outrage and concern to the church who have allowed (and boasted) about some sexual sins that had infiltrated their midst.
Paul compared sin to yeast in verse 6, “Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?”
The problem isn’t a new one.
We live in a world where so much is accepted, so we accept it too.
Accept it readily and thus, compromise God’s word.
I’m not going to give a list of sins; you’re all smart people.
I know how the Lord has convicted my heart, and if there’s compromise you’ve allowed to grow in your life, then, I pray you’ll discuss that with Him.
But I have to emphasize – this isn’t about judging.
It’s about knowing God’s word and trusting that it’s as relevant today as it was when it was written (Isaiah 40:8).
It’s about about understanding that the world’s standards will water down our faith if we aren’t careful.
One small compromise against God’s word will lead to another.
And another.
Then another.
It may not be a popular way of thinking, but you know what?
I spent 40-some years operating under what the world says.
I’ll be 43 in a few months.
What the world thinks of me isn’t my problem.
I live my life now for the eternity waiting on me with Jesus.
Today, as you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to convict your heart if there are areas of compromise you need to address.
Ask Him to help you keep the yeast from overtaking the dough.
