8.5.17 Prayer Prompt: God Calls the Unlikely

PRAYER PROMPT ••• One of my favorite things about studying God’s word is His unexpected way of thinking.
He loves to use the least likely candidate or the most unlikely of situations to bring about amazing results.
From a Human Resources perspective, His way is like pulling the most unskilled and under qualified candidate out of the stack of resumes and offering them the job!
I think it’s further proof of His endless creativity, but beyond that, it removes any doubt about who gets the credit.
Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, “And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.”
Earlier verses from 1 Corinthians speak of how God doesn’t choose the wise or powerful by the world’s standards (1 Corinthians 1:26:29).
We can’t expect God to do things our way or choose who we would have thought was maybe a better candidate.
Would we have chosen a man with a speech impediment to lead the Israelites out of Egypt?
Would we have chosen a prostitute to help conquer Jericho?
Would we have chosen a scrawny teenager to take on a powerful giant?
Would we have chosen a child with a packed lunch of a couple fish and some bread from mom to feed 5000?
Or would we have chosen someone who had been on a vengeful rampage against the early church to extend God’s Gospel to the world?
God chooses the unexpected.
What do you think He’s calling you to do?
As a child of God, He has set you apart (John 15:19) and He has a plan.
If you allow Him, He will use you to extraordinary purposes that aren’t of you, but are proof of His power working through you.
Today, as you pray, ask God to help you be an unlikely candidate for His will.
Ask Him to use you, not through your strengths, but through your weakness, so there’s no question who is in control.
