My Grace-Full Life

8.24.19 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Balance

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• This morning, I thought I’d write about balance. Mostly because I need to preach it to myself. I’m not very good about having a balanced life. Rest is a struggle for me because I feel like I should be doing something.

As I mulled over this topic, a verse came to mind. In Proverbs 11:1 ESV, it says, “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight.”

There are several passages in the Bible that talk about honest scales and I’ve always looked at those verses as “don’t try to add extra weight and cheat people” kind of directives. And they do address that issue which is weighted down by greed (pun intended).

But what if there’s another message there for us—especially those of us who struggle with balance in life?

God told us in the Ten Commandments that we are to rest on the 7th day and to keep it Holy. We were to use the other six days of the week to do our work.

Y’all, I’m not going to lie—I’m the WORST at keeping this commandment. Most weeks, I come home from church, eat lunch, and then work until evening. And then I feel guilty because I didn’t rest even though if I were resting, I’d feel guilty for not working.

We (I) have to find a balance in our time. It’s not something God gave us as an option. It was a command. And just as an honest set of scales that balances fairly and justly, so will He delight if we balance our lives to include a day of rest.

Today, as you pray, thank God for His commands, all of which serve to protect us and serve our best interests. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you find the right balance in your life, give you the ability to say no, and help you find rest.
