My Grace-Full Life

10.16.17 Prayer Prompt: Childlike Faith

PRAYER PROMPT ••• Nothing exemplifies trust more than the image of a child holding the hand of the one who cares for them.
It’s an image of innocence and utter dependence.
I’ve been thinking about the childlike faith Jesus spoke of in Matthew 18:3-4, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
As we mature in our faith, our trust must become more childlike, as we grow completely dependent on God.
The problem is – as we get older, we pride ourselves on self-sufficiency.
We consider dependence to be a form of weakness.
To the world’s point of view, yes.
But we aren’t of the world anymore, are we?
We are living for Christ!
And one of the things I love about God is how He loves to work through weakness.
When we are weak yet trusting, He can use us for great purpose!
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:9a “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”
It’s immaturity to think, “I’m going to do it by myself.”
It’s the mature Christian who says, “I can’t do anything without Christ.”
Childlike faith is also rooted in humility.
It’s about turning to God for all things, both big and small.
Just as a small child looks to his parents to care for him, so we need to look to Him.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
Sure, there are seasons of life where we wonder, “Why is God making me do this?”
Whether it’s unemployment, sickness, or other hardships – God never promised things would be easy.
After all, this is earth; not heaven.
But we trust God’s plan, even when He works on a need-to-know-basis.
No matter what happens, our job is to trust Him with the dependent, childlike faith that knows He’s going to protect us.
Today, as you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with childlike wonder of all Christ did for you.
Ask Him to replace your pride and independence with a spirit of humility and dependence.
To give you a childlike faith.
