TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)
PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Waaaaaaaay back when I was 19, I worked at the mall. I usually got off work at 10:30, and I’d go home, watch some TV and take a shower, and wait for my friends to call me. They got off work around midnight, and we’d meet at the Waffle House (no comments—I know) and hang out until 3 AM. Then, I’d go home, sleep a bit, then go to work the next day, sometimes as early as 8 AM. Yeah, I can’t do that anymore. I don’t have a clue how I had the energy to do that night after night…
Flash forward to my mid-30s when I met Wayne. I was almost 36 when we got married, and for the first four years of our marriage, we lived in Cincinnati, but I drove home to NC every four to six weeks to stay for two to three weeks at a time. I have no idea how many times I’ve driven that 7.5-hour drive, but can we say burnout?!? I don’t know how I did it.
I’m 45 now, and yesterday, I drove a little over an hour to a meeting with my client and then an hour-ish home, and it wore me out. I went to bed early. I can’t do that road-warrior stuff anymore. Two hours round trip just about demolished me.
The point is: we change. What we could do then is not the same as what we can do now. In some things, we improve. In others, we wonder whether we used to be insane. (The answer is usually a cut-and-dry “yes.”)
But no matter how much we change… No matter how much our circumstances change… Or how much the world changes… And even when the world goes all 2020 on us… We have the promise that God is God, and He doesn’t change.
In Malachi 3:6a, God said, “For I the Lord do not change;“ and in one of my favorite verses, Hebrews 13:8, it says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
We have the reassurance that amid all the craziness and uncertainty, we have an unshakable and unchangeable Rock (Psalm 62:6) who we can depend on! He’s consistent in His loving patience, grace, and mercy! What He says He will do — He will do.
As we navigate seasons of life, sometimes it feels more like a rollercoaster. The ups and downs of emotional peaks and valleys can drain us. But our God knows and sees all. He is constant when nothing else is.
Let’s find rest in that reassuring truth.
Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for being the same yesterday, today, and forever. Thank Him that He is strong enough to carry us through all our ups and downs and in-betweens. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you lean on Him. And even as you yourself change, ask the Holy Spirit to guide all your changes to bring you closer to Him.
