7.9.20 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Bad News

TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. (Psalm 112:7 ESV)

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• I was on the phone with my mom last night and could hear the news in the background. I told her, “I’m so sick of hearing of all this!” And then, before I went to bed, I stupidly opened the news app for another dose of bad news. Sigh… I know better.

But this morning, God directed me to a verse I’ve paid little attention to in the past… Psalm 112:7 says, “He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.” I’ve read plenty of “do not be afraid” verses, but the wording of this one felt so immediate. So right now. And I needed this reminder. We are surrounded by bad news, but there’s no need to fear.

I dug a little deeper and found that this Psalm is titled a couple of ways, including, “Rewards of the Righteous,” and “The Righteous Will Never Be Moved.” I prefer the latter because that’s where we are, right? If we’ve accepted Christ, there’s no degree of calamity that can shake our Rock and Redeemer. Because He lives… because He has overcome… because He has gone to prepare a place for us… because He is coming back… because of His Spirit that lives inside of us… because of His strength… the righteous in Christ do not need to fear anything*! Even though it feels like the world is crumbling around us and falling apart at the seams, Jesus is still on the throne!

Let us go forward, remembering all of this today. Everything that’s happening is nothing compared to the glorious future that awaits those who have placed their trust in Jesus.

Today, as you pray, thank God for being all-powerful when you feel powerless. Ask the Holy Spirit to remind your heart of the truth of this Psalm… there is no need to fear bad news when we trust in Jesus.
