TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe. (Proverbs 18:10 ESV)
PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• We had storms all afternoon yesterday, and my poor dog was a wreck. My Labrador is named Beth, and she is so full of anxiety during a storm. Trying to get her to go out was frustrating for both of us. She didn’t want to get up, and I didn’t want her to have an accident in the house. I don’t know why I worry about that, though. She never has accidents… I sometimes wonder if she has a bladder of steel because she will “hold it” for hours when we have storms or fireworks. (And please trust me—we have tried it all from doggie Prozac to Benadryl to thunder coats to essential oils and aromatherapy… the only thing that gives her comfort is when we go to the basement, and I let her on the sofa with me.)
Unfortunately, today offers more of the same.
And some days are like that for us too, right? We have our off days when we’re just overwhelmed and weighted down. It feels like the storms of life are going to chase us down and destroy us if we can’t find our safe place.
Where is your safe place?
Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” We have this reminder that God is there to offer us the security of His presence. He is our safe place and refuge.
When we believe that truth, we can embrace King David’s words from Psalm 4:8, “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Have you ever slept through the storm that everyone talked about the next day? Everyone else was tired while you were well-rested. Not to brag, Friends, but I’ve slept through Hurricane Hugo in the 80s, and it’s very, very rare that a storm disrupts my sleep. I’m not using this illustration to say that we won’t be aware of the storms of life… I’m saying they won’t affect us as they do others who toss and turn and fret and worry.
God has promised to walk through every storm with you. His Word doesn’t say you’ll go around the storm, but even in the middle of it, He offers the security of His presence. We just need to have faith (Matthew 8:23-27).
Today, as you pray, praise Jesus who calms the storms and is never overwhelmed by the thunder or lightning of life. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you trust… ask Him to help you lean into the security of His presence when the storms of life leave you shaken.
