7.15.22 Weekly Blog: Friends

TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone…”

(Genesis 2:18a NKJV)

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Greetings from She Speaks! I’m back in Charlotte, NC for this annual Christian women’s conference designed for writers, speakers, leaders, and content creators. The last time I attended She Speaks was in 2020, when they, along with the rest of the world, pivoted and turned the event virtual.

My friend Tracey and I are staying with my friend Sandra — who could write a book on hospitality! She’s the most generous and amazing hostess! It’s been great to spend time with her, and we’ve got two more days of the program to go! It’s information overload, but the fellowship is what really makes this trip special.

And that’s what I’ve looked forward to the most—spending time with my sisters-in-Christ.

We need relationships. Not the “friends” through the filter of social media but REAL interaction with other people. The Bible is very specific about this. God said, “It is not good that man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18).

We aren’t called to be (or meant to be) isolated Christians. We are the body of Christ and as Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For in fact the body is not one member but many” (1 Corinthians 12:12,14 NKJV).

So my questions today are these: who are you spending time with? Who is investing in you and in whom are you investing? Who is encouraging your walk with Jesus? Who do you talk to about the challenges you face? With whom are you living out your Christian journey?

Consider your own circle of friends and how they are challenging you to pursue God. If you can’t think of anything, consider whether you need to expand your circle… and if someone you spend time with is directing you away from God’s will — reconsider how much time you spend with that friend.

Friendships are an essential part of our Christian journey. So make the time knowing that even Jesus had His circle of friends.

Today, as you pray, thank God for the friends He has given you. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you be a friend and encourager to those in your life, too. And if you need a friend, ask Him to bring you one.
