PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• My mother wants to go to a dude ranch.
I’ve never understood why, but my guess is she’s hoping to run into Sam Elliott.
The point of a dude ranch is to get away.
A chance to unwind and destress.
To return to a more laidback way of life and escape the worries of everyday life.
Sometimes, we need a break.
Not necessarily a dude ranch, because we’re all different.
In my case, a dude ranch would cause more stress because 1) I am very dependent on high-speed internet access and 2) there are bugs (eww).
My idea of getting away and not stressing would be a week in my house, by myself with a stack of books, my coffee maker, and my cats.
(I’m a boring homebody.)
But the ultimate retreat is time with our Heavenly Father.
Psalm 91:1-2 says, “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.”
I’ve known this truth for a long time, but recently, I’ve had reminders that I need to constantly seek Him out for renewal of my heart, mind, and spirit.
The thing about a dude ranch, tropical vacation, or even my gloriously boring week at home—they all end and put us right back in the fast-paced, stress-filled environments we just tried to escape.
The only permanent way to rejuvenate and refresh is in the arms of Jesus.
The 23rd Psalm says, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. (Psalm 23:1-4).
It’s such a comforting scripture; I guess that’s why it’s so often quoted at funerals and written in sympathy cards.
But I see it as a reminder to seek His presence.
He is the One who brings me calm and peace when everything feels like it’s falling apart.
Because even in those moments, He’s still in control.
Today, as you pray, thank the Lord for the rest and sanctuary He offers.
Ask Him to remind you of this truth when stress threatens to overwhelm you.
And ask Him to fill your heart with the wisdom of His word and give you peace.
