PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• When I read a Psalm, I often think, “Oh, this one is my favorite.”
This morning, my favorite is Psalm 139.
I encourage you to read it.
The first verse says, “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.”
The Worrier-Meets-Control-Freak in me finds great comfort in this short little verse.
And Friends, God has been giving me a lot of reminders lately that He’s in control.
From key verses I read and social media shares from my friends, little reminders keep nudging me.
Seriously, if these reminders had elbows, they’d be poking me in the ribs, “Did you hear that, Denise?!”
The most in-my-face reminder was an email I got yesterday from Proverbs 31 with the subject line, “God is not worried.”
I couldn’t help but laugh a little and say, “Okay, God! I hear you loud and clear!”
With all these reminders, then there’s Psalm 139 that shows up in my daily Bible time today and describes in great detail how God knows everything about us (v. 1)…
He knows when we sit or stand (v. 2)…
He knows what we’re going to say before we say it (v. 4)…
He’s always there (v. 7)…
He guides us and gives us strength (v. 10)…
We aren’t hidden from Him even in darkness (v. 12)…
He made us (v. 13)…
He knows the course of our whole lives down to every day’s details before they occur (v. 16)…
He thinks about us with love too great to be measured (v. 17)…
With all that, how can I NOT trust that He’s in control?
The one and only God of the universe is so personally invested in our individual lives, that my meager attempts to worry and be in control are ridiculous and laughable.
I am a work in progress and learning to not worry or have a compulsive need to be in control are things I struggle with daily.
I guess I’ll probably spend a lifetime fighting this battle, but one thing I know with complete assurance is that through my weakness, God’s greatness can shine (Isaiah 41:10; Philippians 4:13; 2 Corinthians 12:10; Ephesians 6:10; and Ephesians 3:20, to name a few).
And He is definitely in control.
Today, as you pray, praise God for knowing all the details and knowing us from the inside out!
If you struggle as I do with worry and control issues, ask Him to remind you often that 1) He’s not worried and 2) if He knows so many details, He’s got everything under control!
Pray that we will remember to leave our trust where we left it when we accepted the free gift of salvation — in the very hands of Jesus.
