TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1 ESV)
PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Have you ever felt so thirsty that you down glass after glass of water to quench your thirst? You can’t get enough! Our bodies crave water and no amount seems to quench the thirst in those moments!
But what about the times when we’re not thirsty, but still, we’re dehydrated. Our bodies are like that… most Americans are chronically dehydrated but they don’t drink water because they don’t feel thirsty. Without getting into all the details, our lack of thirst is often because of a lack of activity. We’re sedentary as opposed to the times when we’ve been working outside or exercising and become incredibly thirsty.
So if we’re not active and we’re not thirsty, dehydration sneaks up on us. The same is true in our faith journey. If we become apathetic to reading our Bibles or spending time in prayer, we may not realize our thirst at first… we’re busy with other things and distracted from the thirsty cravings of our soul! We’re so consumed with making healthy choices when the healthiest choice we can make is found in the Word of God and on our knees in prayer!
In Psalm 63:1-4, David wrote, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.”
That’s how we conquer spiritual thirst. We turn to Jesus and pray for Him to quench us and ask Him to give us His living water, as He did for the Woman at the Well. Jesus told her, “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14).
Only in Jesus can our spiritual thirst ever be quenched!
Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for offering living water to anyone who asks for it! Ask the Holy Spirit to help you stay spiritually hydrated and fill your heart with the living waters of Jesus.
