4.1.22 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Hope & Reunion

TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 NKJV)

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• My grandfather was such a wonderful man — truly, the greatest man I’ve ever known. He went to heaven 11 years ago today. But there hasn’t been a day since he left that I haven’t missed him. I was still a prodigal when he died. I got through my grief by means of distraction (I was planning my wedding and preparing to move). But even as a prodigal, I knew there was still hope because Papo was a believer.

And today, as a forgiven daughter restored to her Heavenly Father, I rejoice to know that Papo is whole and alive in the presence of Jesus. I have this hope because of God’s Word. Death isn’t the end. For the believer — it’s just the beginning.

Our signature verses today are from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14: “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.”

The term “sleep” refers to death, and to “sleep in Jesus” refers to the believers who died. We’re allowed to miss our loved ones, but if we know they gave their lives to Christ, our grief has to look different. Our sorrow has to be laced with the expectant hope that there will be a reunion! Because the resurrection of Jesus gives that promise to all who have trusted in Him! Death has not had the final say, and Jesus has already won!

So instead of wishing Papo back, I simply thank God for him… I thank Him for the privilege of being Bob Henderson’s granddaughter… I thank Him for the memories we made… and I praise Him that there is a reunion to come with more memories to be made! I ask Jesus to hug Papo for me and tell him that I love him. And since I believe there’s a bakery in heaven (hello — manna!), I add to my prayers that on Papo’s Heavenly anniversary, the angels might make his favorite German Chocolate cake.

Who are you missing? If they trusted in Jesus — rejoice. Your loved ones are complete and praising Jesus with the angels. And if there are doubts or uncertainties about your loved one’s salvation, be thankful that Jesus knows the answer. Don’t dwell on the unknown, but trust God. Rest in Him and let His peace comfort you.

Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for being more powerful than death. As the song goes, “death has lost its grip on me!” Thank Him that you have hope. Ask Him to help you use your loss to show others how they can have hope for eternity too.
