3.13.20 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Thinking About Jesus

TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8 ESV)

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• I don’t know about you, but I’m getting worn out from all this coronavirus talk. It’s consuming every conversation—both online, on the phone, and in person. I pulled up the Fox News app this morning, and the bulk of the headlines are all variations of coronavirus. Social media is covered in it. And I admit that this is the third day in a row that I’ve brought it up…

So, today, let’s focus on Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

WHATEVER IS TRUE: Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

WHATEVER IS HONORABLE: But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)

WHATEVER IS JUST: Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. (Isaiah 30:18)

WHATEVER IS PURE: And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. (1 John 3:3)

WHATEVER IS LOVELY: (lovely from the Greek “προσφιλῆ,” meaning friendly and agreeable) Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.” (John 15:13-14)

WHATEVER IS COMMENDABLE: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16)

WHATEVER IS EXCELLENT: In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

ANYTHING WORTHY OF PRAISE: Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. (Revelation 4:11)

All of these things point back to Jesus. Whatever happens in the world, think of Jesus.

Today, as you pray, thank God that no matter the chaos, He is on the throne and He is good! Ask the Holy Spirit to help you focus on the good and holy… Ask Him to guide your thoughts accordingly.
