PRAISE PROMPT ••• This weekend, my dear friend Amy was in town with her children.
They live in Indiana, but North Carolina is still home for her.
I visited with them on Saturday and was shocked by her youngest.
I’m used to the members of this family towering over me.
All of them are pushing 6’ and I’m only 5’4”.
But this was the first time her youngest looked down at me.
I couldn’t help but comment on how much she’s changed.
Even her voice has matured!
It’s a part of getting older, of course.
How does the saying go?
“Getting older is inevitable; growing up is optional.”
But really, it’s not.
Of course, the saying is meant to encourage the reader to stay young at heart.
We should, but Christians should seek spiritual maturity.
1 Peter 2:2 ESV says, “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation…”
Even those who have grown up in the church have to start with the basics when they become a Christian.
That was my big mistake.
If you’ve read my testimony on my website, you know I grew up in church, but when I became a Christian, I didn’t make personal Bible study a priority.
I figured I already knew it.
So when life hit me, I wasn’t spiritually equipped for the blow.
Through spiritual growth, we’re better prepared for anything life throws at us.
Growth begins after we understand the basics.
In Hebrews, we find a fairly strong admonition to grow as Christians.
Hebrews 5:14-6:1 says, “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God…”
The amazing thing about spiritual growth is the way the Holy Spirit will use our ongoing study of the Bible, even passages we’ve read countless times, and reveal new things to us as we grow in His word!
Today, let’s praise God for giving us Scripture and for the lifetime of maturity and growth we can experience.
Spiritual growth is ongoing and the Holy Spirit will teach us daily if we let Him!
