5.30.19 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Wisdom From God

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• James 3:13 says, “Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom.”

This section of chapter 3 is based on wisdom and jumping down to verse 17, it says, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense.”

Wisdom is a gift from God, and as James points out in 1:5, “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.”

The problem is, wisdom is sort of like a sense of humor.

Everyone thinks they have one, but not everyone actually does.

Those who are wise in their own minds have missed a key ingredient of wisdom—humility.

Let’s go to more scripture to validate that point.

In Proverbs 12:15, it says, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.”

But then if we skootch back a few chapters, Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

The root of wisdom is found in God.

When we kneel in reverent awe of His overwhelming greatness, we begin to understand.

Our wisdom is then tempered with humility and as we surrender to God, we go full circle back to the first verses in James and begin to experience the fruit of the Spirit.

Today, as you pray, acknowledge God for being the source of all wisdom.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you seek God’s wisdom in all you say and do.
