2.13.19 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Focused on Jesus

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Let’s talk about basketball.

(Yes, Friends… it’s really me, and I’m about to make a sports analogy.)

I have watched basketball before (and even made a poor attempt to play it in high school).

Anyone who has seen a game knows that when a player is taking a foul shot, the opposing team will do anything to distract him from making it.

From yelling to waving things on the sidelines, the opponent wants to remove the player’s focus so he won’t make the shot.

We have an opponent too.

And his methods of distraction are generally more subtle.

Sure, he may stamp his feet and wave his arms at times, but he’s more likely to whisper in our ears, “You’re not good enough.”

“You can’t do this.”

“You’re going to fail.”

He will do whatever he can to remove our focus on Jesus and stir doubt in our hearts and minds.

But in Hebrews 12:2, one of my favorite verses in Scripture, we’re reminded to fix our eyes on Jesus.

Let’s turn over to Matthew 14:22-33 when Jesus walked on water.

Jesus could walk on water because, well, He’s Jesus, the Son of God.

But Peter?

He had no divine abilities.

As we mature in our faith, we realize that Peter’s ability to walk on water was based on being focused on Jesus.

When he was distracted by the wind, he began to sink.

It’s through our focus on Jesus that we can also walk on water.

Or climb the mountain.

Or take the leap of faith.

Or even make the shot we need to make.

But we can’t allow ourselves to be distracted.

Eyes on Jesus.

All the time.

We cannot allow the enemy to distract us.

Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for being the One who makes the impossible possible.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you be hyper-focused on Jesus, and not tempted by distractions.
