1.26.19 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Pets We Love

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• When my husband and I got married, we joked that we were the Brady Bunch of pets.

We each had three, so we were significantly outnumbered.

But the inevitable happens.

We lost the first in 2015…

The second last summer, and last night, we lost a third.

My little cat Henry died and I’m just heartbroken.

I shouldn’t have favorites, but he was my favorite.

It seems that every time I get so busy that I barely have my head above water, God reminds me of the importance of being still.

I’m not insinuating that the loss of a loved one is a punishment for a crazy schedule and to-do list, but it does kind of force your hand and make you realize that life isn’t supposed to be lived at Mach 20.

There have to be moments to pause and reflect.

I was running errands when Wayne called and told me to hurry home.

Sometimes, plans get derailed and it’s a good time to remember the wisdom of Psalm 46:10a, “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10).

I have to admit that sometimes, writing a post like this makes me wonder if someone will think I’m stupid.

It doesn’t really matter if they do.

I know not everyone shares my love for animals, but the Bible tells us that animals were a part of God’s creation and that it was good (Genesis 1:20-25).

Animals are just another facet of God’s creative nature…

I mean seriously… have you seen a picture of a platypus?!

Their snouts are hilarious looking!

Plus, since we were made in God’s own image and share His ability to love and feel compassion, it’s good and right for us to care about animals.

God does too – Jesus said that God remembers every sparrow (Luke 12:6).

So when we lose a much-loved pet, it’s a chance to be still, and remember who God is and how magnificent His creation is…

To remember the value of every living thing.

And to pause and reflect on God’s goodness, that He designed us with the capacity to care for His creation.

Today, as you pray, thank God for reminders to be still.

Thank Him for reminders that He is in control over all the world, all the people and animals, and that He never overlooks a single one.

And thank Him for the privilege of loving and caring for the animals entrusted to us.
