12.18.18 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Steeped in God’s Word

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• I’ve been an avid coffee drinker for close to 20 years, but in recent years, I’ve developed a fondness for hot tea.

I’m picky about tea, and prefer floral, herbal teas to traditional Earl Greys or green tea.

For a true tea connoisseur, my steeping methods are probably horrifying.

I never worry about steeping time, but just leave the bag in the cup the whole time I drink the tea and then reuse it a couple more times.

Wrong though my tea-drinking methods are, I recognize the importance of steeping.

Too little and my tea is weak.

Too much and…

Well, as I mentioned, over-steeping hasn’t been an issue for me.

Steeping has two definitions and both are important parts of our faith journey.

Definition #1 is “soak (food or tea) in water or other liquid so as to extract its flavor or to soften it.”

When we steep ourselves in God’s word, He is able change us.

We can learn how to soften our pride and gain humility…

We can better identify sinful tendencies and with the Holy Spirit’s help, remove them from our lives…

And we can absorb a better understanding of God’s goodness.

We can learn His will.

Definition #2 is “surround or fill with a quality or influence.”

There is no better influence we can introduce in our lives than the Word of God.

Psalm 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple…”

Steeping ourselves in the Word is revitalizing and it fills our souls.

And the great news — we can’t over-steep our hearts in God’s word.

In fact, the more we allow ourselves to steep, the better off we are!

Today, as you pray, thank the Holy Spirit for a new day to steep in the Word of God.

Ask Him to soften you and change you. Ask Him to fill your heart with a longing for God’s word and His will.
