3.6.18 Prayer Prompt: Jesus Taught

PRAYER PROMPT ••• Mark 12:38 NLT says, “Jesus also taught: ‘Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces.’”

This is a very important verse because it warns us against those who are all about prestige, rather than sincerity.

This passage also segues into Jesus’ warning against false prophets.

But the part I want to focus on today is “Jesus also taught.”

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is often referred to as Teacher, so of course, I knew He taught.

What sort of things did He teach?

Jesus taught about love; who God is; how to pray; about faith; about believing in Him; how to let go of worry; about forgiveness and redemption, to name a few things.

He taught us what to do, as well as what not to do.

In short, He taught us how to be children of God.

He gave us instructions on how to be saved and spend eternity with Him in heaven.

The fact that Jesus used parables to teach shows what a brilliant teacher He was.

Think about your own school days.

Do you remember lists of facts, or do you remember examples your teachers used to explain things?

I was never a great student, but I remembered story details far better than facts and figures.

When we think of Jesus now, what titles do you think of?

Personally, I think of Savior, Redeemer, Christ, Messiah, and Lord most often.

But do you think it’s important for us to think of Him as Teacher?

We may not be sitting at His feet listening to Him directly, as others did 2000 years ago…

But that doesn’t mean He’s stopped teaching us.

Being willing to learn from Him, read His word, and grow in our knowledge of Him is a lifelong learning experience.

We can’t be complacent with the basics either.

Hebrews 12:11-14 calls us to grow in spiritual maturity and that happens as we learn from God’s Word.

Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for being the greatest Teacher and for giving us instructions that are still relevant.

Thank Him for all His titles – Savior and Lord and Redeemer – but also thank Him for being our ultimate Teacher, with lessons that pave the way to eternal life with Him.
