3.4.18 Prayer Prompt: The Power of Gospel Music

PRAYER PROMPT ••• Yesterday, I went to a Christian women’s conference featuring Liz Curtis Higgs.

I heard her speak last year at She Speaks and was super-excited to hear her again.

The Holy Spirit used her in a profoundly beautiful way, including a moment that was so special, I couldn’t begin to put it into mere words.

High Road Worship led the music at the conference and they were great!

I loved their blend of traditional Gospel music.

After hearing High Road perform a bluegrass rendition of “I’ll Fly Away,” while 900+ women clapped along, I have such a longing to step back in time to my dad’s music room, and pull all his old Gospel records off the shelf and listen to them one after another.

A few months ago, I wrote an article on traditional Gospel music for one of the magazines I write for (Forsyth Family).

In preparation for the article, I polled my Facebook friends and have never gotten such a response before!

It’s no doubt that traditional Gospel songs have roots that run deep.

The Apostle Paul wrote in Colossians 3:16, “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.”

I can’t help but think if Paul had access to Gospel music as we know it, he would have sent along a compilation CD, or a playlist at the very least.

The Bible supports worship through music!

Remember the psalmist told us to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord,” so singing on key is optional (Psalm 98:4).

But in all seriousness, what a wonderful way to share the Gospel with those around you.

We often play music we like without considering how others feel about it… but playing a good selection of Gospel hymns is a way to share the love of Christ without saying a word.

Gospel certainly isn’t just for church!

It’s another way to share Jesus through our actions.

Today, as you pray, thank the Holy Spirit for the way He inspires us through music.

Thank Him that through notes and lyrics, we can further press the message of Christ on our hearts and worship Jesus through song.
