10.23.17 Prayer Prompt: Sin On Repeat

PRAYER PROMPT ••• After nine years as a writer for my community magazines, I’m used to getting confused about dates.

I write about Christmas during Halloween; Valentine’s Day during Christmas; Back to School during Fourth of July.

I tend to think a few months ahead and often have to remember which month it actually is.

However, it seems I just went through the opposite issue.

When I posted yesterday’s Prayer Prompt on my website, I realized that I’d labeled the last eight titles as August.

The dates were right; the month was wrong.

I clearly made the first mistake and, referring to the title of the previous post, the mistakes piled up with each new blog post.

As I corrected each title, I thought about how this simple mistake snowballed into a pattern.

The same thing often happens with sin.

Putting the wrong date on a blog isn’t a sin, but when we allow sin the first foothold, then the second, and third… we create a pattern.

Just as I couldn’t see the error in front of me for eight days, repeating the same sin dulls our hearts.

Then suddenly, the Holy Spirit may convict our hearts in an eye-opening way.

In Sunday School yesterday, we had a fantastic lesson that emphasized this point even further.

Galatians 5:1 says, “So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.”

What areas in your life are holding you back?

Are there things you do on repeat that prevent you from growing as a Christian?

I’ll share my personal battle with self-sufficiency and pride.

My family and friends know I refer to it as “shove over and let me drive.”

It’s a battle with my human need to be in control versus remaining humble so I can let God have His way.

I’ve been a slave to so-called perfection, self-reliance, ego, and so many other prideful side-effects.

I have to constantly remember that my true liberation is in surrender to Christ Jesus.

Today, as you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to show you patterns of sin that you may no longer be mindful of in your life.

Ask Him to convict your heart and help you make changes that will strengthen your walk with Jesus.
