PRAYER PROMPT ••• I couldn’t wait to get my driver’s license.
Almost every morning, Mom would hand me the keys to her hideous brown Oldsmobile and tell me to warm up the car while she finished getting ready for work.
I loved turning the key and feeling the engine come to life.
After a while, I went a step further.
I put the car in reverse and slowly backed out of the carport and down the driveway.
Then I drove it back up.
I did that over and over.
I wasn’t sure how much she would yell at me if she caught me, but I didn’t care.
I was 10-years-old and ready to hit the open road.
Six long years later (and a day – since my birthday is Christmas and the DMV stubbornly refuses to open for those who turn 16 on a major international holiday), I had my license.
I also had a grey Buick – a car almost as ugly as my mother’s Oldsmobile.
But I didn’t care.
It represented freedom.
The possibilities were endless.
Isn’t freedom what we all crave?
What does freedom represent to you?
Is it the ability to come and go as you please?
Or is there something else?
Each of us has an internal craving for something more.
Jesus is the only one who can offer that answer.
In John 8:32, Jesus said, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
And a few chapters later, He said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
True freedom is only available through the grace of Jesus.
Anything else is a cheap substitute.
An up and down the driveway excursion.
Sure, you’re moving, but you’re not going anywhere.
He offers us the license to be truly free, anywhere we go.
Romans 8:2 says, “And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.”
What a joy to know we are free in Christ!
Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for setting you free.
Ask the Holy Spirit to move through you so you can show others how to experience eternal freedom through the grace of Jesus.
