TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 ESV)
PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Today — we’re talking about absolutes. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 ESV). It’s a definitive statement. There’s no ambiguity there. But my questions are—do you believe it? Do you live it? If someone challenged you about it, would you be absolute in your belief in Jesus is the one and only right way to heaven?
Because just as emphatic as Jesus’ words were and just as staunchly as I believe them—there are those who are equally convinced that there is grey area… or there isn’t one absolute answer.
I’m still troubled by a conversation I had a few years ago by someone who was absolute in her conviction that God would allow those who don’t believe to go to heaven. Despite my points direct from Scripture, including Jesus’ words, she was resolute. Unwavering.
Similarly, I live each day haunted by the knowledge that a dear loved one is absolute in their belief in nothing. No God. No heaven. No hell. My heart breaks daily that this soul I love so much has completely rejected the Jesus I love with all my heart.
These are two examples. One who believes in God but who has reinvented the rules. And one who doesn’t believe in God and says there are no rules.
The audacity is mind-blowing. Who do we think we are? We aren’t God! We don’t decide how this is going to go. We are the creation. We don’t get to tell the Creator what the rules are to get to His heavenly home. And denying Him all together is another topic.
It all boils down to this—we either take God at His Word. Or we don’t. There is no middle ground. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” And as His followers, the life we live should point back to this truth. We should always be prepared to tells others why this is absolute. Why there are no other options. Why there isn’t any room for grey.
It’s why we need to know our Bibles. Don’t be intimidated by it. Everyone starts at the beginning. Just open it up, read it, and allow God to speak to you. And then, once you’re done—read it again. Read it over and over. Use trusted resources and commentaries (they aren’t all created equal so be picky and ask questions). Do what you need to do to be able to defend your faith and tell others why Jesus is the one and only way.
Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for spelling it out so clearly for us. Thank Him for leaving no room for guessing but thank Him for being direct. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live this truth daily and to equip you to defend it lovingly, with kindness in your convictions.
