PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Do you ever see those math videos on social media that show “new” ways to complete an equation? I saw one this week, and it just made me cringe. Don’t you hate those?! Seriously — I hated math when I was in school. But the way I learned math isn’t broken… and thankfully, neither is my calculator.
Yet there are those people who have to make everything more difficult by inventing new, crazy elaborate, often scenic route ways to get the answer to a problem, when the original way was far more direct and simple.
If you’ve read your Bible, you know where this is going…
The Bible isn’t broken.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). There’s no room for a loophole in a statement that is so specific and definitive.
Yet, our world wants to reinvent everything, including the options and ways to get to heaven. Look — you can’t fault someone for ignorance if they’ve never heard the Truth. But you can fault someone who has heard it, claims to believe it, and then tries to reinvent it. What I find most troubling are those who go to church and call themselves Christians yet give alternative options for eternal life. A 2021 study by Probe Ministries revealed this disturbing statistic: close to 70 percent of born-again Christians say there are other ways to Heaven aside from turning to Christ for salvation.
True story: I’m not going to give this person’s name because those who are “fans” will shut down and refuse to do their homework… but it’s easy enough to Google. An incredibly popular preacher went on Larry King Live in 2005 to give an interview. When asked if an atheist will get to heaven, this pastor said, “You know what, I’m going to let someone — I’m going to let God be the judge of who goes to heaven and hell. I just — again, I present the truth, and I say it every week. You know, I believe it’s a relationship with Jesus. But you know what? I’m not going to go around telling everybody else if they don’t want to believe that that’s going to be their choice. God’s got to look at your own heart. God’s got to look at your heart, and only God knows that.”
What a spineless answer.
This is verbatim — copied directly from transcripts, and it breaks my heart. This pastor is internationally known and could have made a tremendous impact if he’d have given a biblical answer. In the same interview, the pastor says he believes the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and yet, he missed this golden opportunity to tell people the one way to eternal life.
Again, the Bible is not broken. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said this… you either believe the Bible completely or not at all. Christianity is not a cafeteria where we go through the line picking out which parts we want in our lives. Isaiah 40:8 beautifully and accurately declares, “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” And 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…”
Jesus is the way. The one and only way for eternal life. To say anything different or insinuate that there’s another option cheapens the whole reason He died on the cross. He went to Calvary because we had no chance for redemption if He didn’t.
As Jesus told Nicodemus many years ago, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
The way is simple. We don’t need to rewrite the formula.
As I shared last week, Pastor Lee Strobel summed it up based on John 1:12 — Believe + Receive = Become.
One formula. One answer — Jesus Christ.
Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for being the way, the truth, and the life. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you be bold in the Truth, unafraid to embrace what Scripture tells us. And if you don’t know Jesus, or you are counting the idea that you’re a good person — please read your Bible and pray. Humble yourself and acknowledge that you (like all of us) are a sinner who needs a Savior. And invite Jesus into your life, acknowledging that as the sinless Son of God — He is the one and only way, the one and only Savior.
