PRAYER PROMPT ••• Johnny Cash sang it: “I Walk the Line.”
It’s a song about staying faithful to his wife while he was on the road and guarding his heart for her alone.
While the song is meant to be a romantic one, some of the lyrics can be related to a faith walk.
When we accept Christ as our Savior, it’s a commitment to walk in His word and do our best to honor Him.
We “walk the line” of faith, living by the example He gave us.
But do you ever feel like you’re struggling to walk in your faith?
Do you feel like the line is too hard to follow?
No one said the Christian walk was easy.
It’s simple.
But not easy.
Ephesians 5:15 says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise.”
The unwise of this world are those who are stomping through the woods and doing their own thing.
It’s an act that is applauded in today’s culture as “bold” and “trailblazing.”
But it’s dangerous.
You don’t know where you’re going; what dangers lay ahead; and it’s a quick and easy way to get in trouble or lost.
Jesus told us which path to take.
He said, in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
He’s already blazed the path for us; it’s our job to follow it and not get off course.
He’s also told us it’s narrow (Matthew 7:13-14).
That narrow path (or line, if we want to return to the Johnny Cash analogy) is what keeps us focused on what’s ahead.
Jesus.
Jesus is our present.
Our future.
Our eternity.
Keeping our eyes on Him is the only way to ensure we won’t be lost and lose our way on the path (line).
It’s the walk of the wise.
Wrapping up with another Johnny Cash reference, he once said, “Being a Christian isn’t for sissies. It takes a real man to live for God—a lot more man than to live for the devil, you know? If you really want to live right these days, you gotta be tough.”
In other words, walk the line.
Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for setting the path before us and showing us the way to Him and eternal life with Him.
