My Grace-Full Life

11.9.19 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Soul Cravings

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• There’s something strange, unusual, and highly abnormal going on this morning—I’m coffee-less. That doesn’t happen very often. I just finished reading my Bible and prayer journaling, and I reached beside me for my usual cup of coffee and only found a bottle of water. Well, I guess that’s halfway there. But not quite what I’m looking for…

Isn’t that often true? We reach for the things we expect to satisfy us and find we’re disappointed. They fail to live up to our expectations. Just as coffee is my beverage of choice—the one I crave first thing in the morning (as well as throughout the day, if I’m being honest), so does my soul have a craving.

Once upon a time, I tried to fill that craving with stuff and with people and with other distractions. But nothing quenched my soul’s longing until I reached for Jesus. I’m not bringing anything new or insightful to the table this morning, but there’s a definite reason Jesus called Himself the Bread of Life (John 6:35) and offered Himself as Living Water (John 7:37-39)—because this craving is a universal truth. Whether we act on it or not, we all have a longing for our souls to be fed by the Bread of Life and quenched by the Living Waters of Jesus. And until we have Jesus, we will never find the satisfaction our souls are seeking.

David wrote it best when he said, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night;for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me” (Psalm 63:1-8 ESV).

My question is this—are you clinging to Jesus, knowing that only He can fill your heart, soul, and life as no one else can? Until we do, we will always find ourselves lacking. Our soul’s hunger will never be satisfied and our soul’s thirst will never be quenched.

Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for being the Bread of Life and the source of Living Water. Thank Him for being the One who can fill our soul’s longings. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you daily as you feast on the Word and drink in the Living Waters of Jesus. Ask Him to help you seek Jesus before you attempt to appease your craving with anything else.
