11.5.17 Prayer Prompt: Serving God Through Our Work

PRAYER PROMPT ••• I’m a volunteer for Proverbs 31 Ministries and I serve in three areas of the ministry.
One of them gives me the opportunity to play with Excel spreadsheets.
If there’s anything I love to do as much as I love to read or write, it’s playing in Excel.
I love creating spreadsheets and organizing data.
If I can throw a pivot table in there or a chart, all the better.
(Yes, I’m aware that I’m a nerd.)
So it was a rockin’ Saturday night at the Heidel house because I was working on Proverbs 31 spreadsheets for about two hours.
In the middle of it all – I realized, “How amazing to have an opportunity to do something I love for God!”
Not only has the Holy Spirit used my love for writing to God’s glory, but He opened up the door for me to use my love for spreadsheets in a ministry I love.
Maybe you don’t share my love for Excel, but I know one thing for fact, whether I personally know you or not – you have God-given talents.
You have things you’re good at doing.
And jobs you do for a living.
Now the question is: how are you using them for God’s glory?
Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Whether you are analyzing heath care options as an insurance agent or stocking shelves, there is an opportunity for you to work for God’s glory.
He may be using your expertise in insurance to help a family find a plan they will need in six months.
Stocking a grocery store shelf with cake mix may not seem a glamorous assignment, but for the grandmother who is planning her grandson’s birthday cake, she’s grateful that the shelf isn’t empty.
In everything we do, we can serve others beyond ourselves.
Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
When we do our work or hobbies with the mindset of serving others, we are serving Christ.
Today, as you pray, ask God to help you see your work as a possibility for service.
Ask Him to help you recognize things you do as opportunities to glorify Him.
