PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Day 4 of our series on trust, and today, we’re going to talk about routine.
We tend to get very complacent in our habits, trusting things to roll along the same day after day.
Getting jarred out of routine may be as trivial as oversleeping the alarm clock and missing a few steps in a rush to get out the door, or it may be as life-altering as getting a phone call that means your whole life is about to change.
One of Bible’s best examples of routine complacency is that of the Pharisees.
In Luke 20:46-47, Jesus said of them, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
These men were complacent in their roles and trusted their status more than they trusted God whom they claimed to love.
They failed to recognize the revolutionary role Jesus was there to fulfill.
At times, God will jar us out of our complacency in order to increase our faith or give us a new opportunity for obedience.
But let’s all agree here…
It’s not always easy to leave a comfort zone.
We can’t put our trust in familiar circumstances because they are always subject to change.
The only constant is God!
Malachi 3:6a says, “For I the Lord do not change…” and Hebrews 13:8 reiterates it, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Through change, we are to trust in God.
Let’s look at another example from the Bible.
Daniel was known for his devotion to God, and so his enemies devised a plot to have him killed.
They had a law signed that anyone who prayed to anyone other than the king would be thrown into a lion’s den.
In Daniel 6:10, we read, “When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.”
Daniel wasn’t putting his trust in his routine…
He was putting his trust in God.
And as we know, God spared Daniel from the lions.
The enemies who hatched this scheme?
Not so much…
When we trust in God more than we trust our comfort zone, He can work powerfully in our lives, using us and the circumstances we find ourselves into His glory.
Today, as you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to keep you flexible to the circumstances around you, and to help you trust in God more than what’s routine and familiar.
Ask Him to encourage you to be bold when your routines are rattled and to always look to Him, with absolute trust!
