PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• In Genesis 22:17, God promised Abraham that He would multiply his descendants so great that they would be like the stars or grains of sand — impossible to count.
God didn’t make this promise just because He liked Abraham…
Abraham was obedient and trusting.
He was a man who sought God’s will above his own.
And for his faithfulness, God rewarded him.
When we go about life and do our own thing, we can’t expect to receive God’s blessings.
From the world’s perspective, things may look great, but it’s important to remember that blessings don’t always happen within our earthly lifetime.
Certainly, Abraham isn’t sitting in a rocking chair today, looking at his countless list of descendants and trying to figure out how to buy Christmas gifts for all the grandkids ever born in his lineage.
He died; Abraham hasn’t been here to see the countless people who came from his once childless marriage to Sarah.
God’s blessings may happen in the here and now, sure…
But the blessings we should hope for ones of eternal significance.
Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19-20).
And when we follow God’s will above our own, we fulfill verse 21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Is your heart invested in material things and temporary pleasures?
Or is it invested in knowing God’s will?
If we commit our hearts to God’s will, He will bless us as Abraham, in unimaginable ways and impossible to measure.
Today, as you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to help you focus your heart on God’s will, not your own.
Ask Him to help you think about your words and actions in terms of eternal significance.
And praise God from whom all blessings flow…
