PRAYER PROMPT ••• There’s a very powerful image that comes when you think of crossroads.
Which path will you choose?
Robert Frost dedicated an entire poem about the choice between two paths (“The Road Not Taken”).
And (spoiler alert!), at the end of one of my favorite movies, “Castaway,” Tom Hanks stands at a crossroads: a place where he must make a choice in which direction his life will go.
We all have the same choice.
It may not be literally standing in a crossroad looking south, east, north, and west, but we all choose our own path.
Jeremiah 6:16a says, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Paths are a common illustration in the Bible.
Some examples:
- Deuteronomy 5:33a (“Stay on the path that the Lord your God has commanded you to follow.”);
- Psalm 119:105 (“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”);
- Psalm 17:5 (“My steps have stayed on your path; I have not wavered from following you.”);
- Proverbs 2:20 (“So follow the steps of the good, and stay on the paths of the righteous.”);
- Hebrews 12:13 (“Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.”).
God uses the illustration regularly because it’s so relatable!
Paths are a part of a journey and life is a journey.
We have a choice to make.
Will we follow His path, or the world’s?
Paul wrote to the Colossians in Colossians 2:20, “You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world…?”
The Colossians had chosen the path of God, but were still trying to walk by the world’s rules and standards.
What about you?
Are you walking God’s path and finding the rest your soul craves?
Or still trying to keep up with the world?
Today, as you pray, ask God to help you stay focused on His path.
Ask Him to redirect you if you stray over to the world’s.
Thank Him that His path leads to eternal life, thanks to the love and grace of Jesus our Savior.
