PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• I have two large trees in my backyard. As the autumn season kicks off, these two trees are beginning to litter my yard with their leaves. But it doesn’t feel like fall yet. At. All. Indeed, the leaves changing feel a tad incongruous with 88, 90 degree days we are still having (our high today is 95!)
Facebook is covered with memes about the absence of fall weather. I saw one last night that was pretty cute—“Autumn decided that for its Halloween costume this year, it’s going to go as summer.” But that’s life in the South!
As I dress for summer while it looks like fall, I thought of the omnipresence of God. In Psalm 139, David wrote the rhetorical questions, “Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7 CSB). David was far more poetic than I am, but the answer is nowhere.
There are times when we can’t feel God’s presence and we wonder where He is. But even in those moments when we can’t feel Him, He is watching us, as He said in Jeremiah 23:24, “‘Can a person hide in secret places where I cannot see him?’ —the Lord’s declaration. ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’ —the Lord ’s declaration” (CSB).
So even when the world seems to be completely empty of His presence, we can trust that He is there. He will never not be within reach of anyone who earnestly seeks Him.
Today, as you pray, thank God for His omnipresence. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you be ever-aware of that truth, even in circumstances when you feel alone.
