10.11.19 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Temptation and Self-Control

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• I did a very dangerous thing yesterday. I went to Costco hungry. Never a good idea. Especially when part of your objective was to buy chocolate for the shopping trip you’re organizing for 65 women. I can’t even tell you how much chocolate I came home with… including a few options that aren’t for the shopping trip. One involves a canister of salted caramels that my husband had a spiritual moment with…  the other is a bag of French crepes that have been wrapped in hazelnut chocolate… Nom nom nom!

So, with all that said, we have two signature verses today. First, “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV) and “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV).

Christians on Weight Watchers embrace these Scriptures. Can I get an amen?!

In all seriousness, these really are comforting promises. When temptation overwhelms us, we have options. God promises to help us resist if we lean on Him. He didn’t make us to be powerless, but to be strong in Christ!

Today, as you pray, thank God for His provision and strength. Thank Him for helping you when temptation comes and ask the Holy Spirit to help you and strengthen you as you need it. Ask Him to fill you with a spirit of self-control.
