PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• Many/Most/All of us have expectations of what will fill us. What will complete us. We search for that fulfillment through relationships, stuff, food, jobs, education, travel, and more. And while there may be some amazing experiences along the way, eventually—it’s not enough.
Except for Jesus.
Jesus told the Woman at the Well, “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14 ESV). It’s that Living Water of Jesus that truly fills the God-sized hole we are all born with and that every human longs to fill. We need Him. We are born with an innate craving for Jesus. Some people are better at hiding it or ignoring it than others, but if we all have a moment of total transparency, we would admit that every expectation we have falls short.
Except for Jesus.
For many of us, we’ve accepted that Living Water Jesus offers, yet we forget to drink it. We forget to pray. We forget to read our Bible. We forget to let Jesus carry our burdens. We’re too busy for church. We forget the love we had at first (Revelation 2:4). But it’s only at the feet of that first love that we can find true, everlasting contentment and peace.
Nothing else will measure up.
Except for Jesus.
Today, as you pray, thank Jesus for His Living Water and being the source of all we ever need. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with an ongoing passion and longing for the first love you had for Jesus. Ask Him to help you pursue it. Ask Him to help you resist the temptation to turn to anyone or anything else to satisfy the place in your heart where Jesus alone belongs.
