PRAYER PROMPT ••• Cincinnati is a city known for seven hills.
I think that’s an understatement.
When I lived there (a brief four years), I often found myself at a stoplight and couldn’t see what was in front of me because the hill was so steep.
So what, right?
Push the gas, and trust the road.
For the normal person, no big deal.
But no one has ever accused me of being normal.
I have some control issues I’m working on, and I like to see what’s ahead of me.
I’d try to raise myself out of my seat to see what was over the hill.
It didn’t matter how many times I drove that road.
If I couldn’t see beyond the hill, I would proceed slowly, much to the aggravation of the drivers behind me.
My issues of seeing beyond the hill weren’t reserved exclusively for when I sat in the driver’s seat.
When my husband drove, I felt the same anxiety of “what’s over the hill?”
We serve a God who often operates on a need-to-know basis.
He may tell us to go, but He doesn’t always tell us what’s next until we’re crowning the hill.
Proverbs 16:9 says, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
I love this verse, but I often wonder why God doesn’t give us more information to work with.
Why can’t we see beyond the horizon?
I know He’s looking for us to trust in Him.
I know He’s patient.
But the more I think about it, the more I think that God likes to savor the moment.
Maybe He wants us to do the same.
He could have created the universe in the blink of an eye, but He took six days to let His creation take shape.
I imagine Him like a painter, with arms crossed, stepping back to study His work and to reflect on what He’d done.
Trusting beyond the horizon doesn’t come easily for me.
But if I want to become more like Him, I need to slow down and savor moment by moment.
He knows what’s next.
He knows every detail that will happen today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year.
Trust Him; savor the moment; relax because He knows what’s on the other side.
Today, as you pray, thank God for knowing what lies ahead.
Ask Him to help you savor the moment as He reveals His plan.
Ask Him to help you be patient for His timing and trust beyond the horizon.
