1.18.20 Praise & Prayer Prompt: Who is Driving?

TODAY’S SIGNATURE VERSE ••• The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand. (Psalm 37:23-24)

PRAISE & PRAYER PROMPT ••• I had a dream last night that I showed up to teach Sunday school in my pajamas.  Apparently, I arrived at church in my hot air balloon, having just floated through the Starbucks drive-through for coffee. And then, before I reached for my bag of clothes to change for teaching, I got out of my balloon to tether it to my parking spot. But without a driver, the balloon started to float away. I ended up hanging on to the side. I had to choose— drop to the ground and teach in my pajamas or somehow climb up in the basket and steer the balloon back to my parking spot and be late to teach.

Wh-what?!?!

Yeah, I woke up saying the same thing. To be clear:

  1. I don’t own a hot air balloon.
  2. You couldn’t pay me enough money to ride in one.
  3. The only time I go to Starbucks is when I’m desperate for coffee.
  4. It’s not my week to teach.

The only part of this dream that is remotely plausible is the idea of teaching in my pajamas because frankly, they are my favorite clothes. But I wouldn’t do that.

I don’t have a clue what this dream means and I don’t necessarily think we need to try to interpret every weird dream our imagination conjures up in our sleep. But one thing did hit me when I woke up from it.

Without a driver in our lives, we are all floating along aimlessly.

Psalm 37:23-24 says, “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.” It sounds like a Proverb, doesn’t it? I had to double-check the Scripture reference. But this verse comes from a Psalm in which David bemoans the acts of evil that seem to get people ahead while the righteous suffer.

It’s a Psalm of Hope—no matter how hard this world is… even when evil seems so pervasive… when it seems that those who hate God always prosper… there’s a day coming when it won’t matter how much money you have. It won’t matter how far up the Corporate Ladder you’ve climbed. No one will care what kind of car you had or how big your house was. The only thing that will matter is whether or not you accepted Jesus as your Savior and gave the Holy Spirit permission to steer your life.

Because when He steers, we aren’t going to float aimlessly. He has a plan and a purpose. We may wonder why He takes us through fierce storms, but we can trust that He’s not going to let us be hurt.

Let’s re-read the verse… “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.”

  1. God had a plan and direction for our lives before we took our first breath.
  2. When we surrender to Him, we may experience pain, but we never need to lose hope or peace because God is with us.

When it feels like you’re floating aimlessly, ask yourself this question—Who is driving?

Today, as you pray, thank the Holy Spirit for His ability to navigate all circumstances. Thank Him that once He arrived in your heart, He has never left you and never will. Ask Him to drive your life. Give Him permission. Let Him know that you trust His direction and you’re willing to cede control to Him.
